Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. How do I Apply to Study at ICA?

You can make an aplication by either

  • applying onlie
  • using an agent
  • makeing an appointment.

Application/Enrollment form may be posted.

Q2. What do I need to apply?

You or your agent needs to complete the application/enrolment form. You must supply a copy of your latest IELTS result (no more than 2 years old) and a copy of your valid passport. You may also wish to supply documentation relating to other relevant qualifications, or work experience and career wishes. Your information will be assessed and authorized and if your application is successful you will be issued an Offer of Place Letter. This will set out your fees for your programme of study, a quote for compulsory insurance, other related costs and provide details of how to make payment. You will either need to pay by bank transfer (details are listed in the Offer of Place) or come into the International Office and pay the Cashier. You will not be enrolled in your programme of study until you have paid in full the amount stated on the Offer of Place Letter. You will need to pay for your programme of study at least two weeks before your programme commences. If you have supplied all the relevant information your enrollment will be processed within 48 hours.

Q3. How do I get my Student Visa?

Once you have received your Offer of Place Letter, you are then required to pay your fees to ICA. Once you have received your receipt, you can take your Offer of Place letter and receipt to the New Zealand Immigration Office in your country. They will issue you with a visa and you will be able to commence your course. You must also provide a copy of your student visa to the Marketing.

Q4. How and when do I get an ID card?

Once you have paid your fees and your enrollment has been processed, please see the receptionist to have an ID card issued. We will take your photo and print your card for you. You need an ID card to access the Library and log onto the computers at the ICA.

Q5. What happens if I decide to withdraw from all or part of my programme?

You must inform your Head of Department, fill in the Application for Refund form and discuss your requirements with the Marketing Department.

Q6. What about home stays?

Our Student Services Department can arrange a home stay for you if you request this or tick ‘yes’ for a home stay on the application/enrolment form. The cost of homestay is around NZ$200 per week currently. Students must stay a minimum of four weeks in a home stay before choosing other accommodation.

Q7. How do I pay the home stay?

You can pay the home stay directly, two weeks in advance.

Q8. What happens when I arrive at Auckland International Airport?

Will someone meet me? Pleases discuss this with you agent or ICA can arrange the pick up for you (ICA Charge NZ$100 per pick up)

Q9. Can I drive in New Zealand?

If you have an up-to-date driver’s license, you can drive for up to 12 months on your foreign license. Then you must sit a New Zealand license test.

Q10. Can I work in New Zealand?

You may work for up to 20 hours per week on your student permit.

Q13. Do I have to have medical insurance?

Yes. Medical insurance is compulsory for all international students studying in New Zealand. We will arrange this for you unless you can provide us with evidence that you already have insurance. If you do not have medical insurance, then you will most likely have to pay the full cost of any medical treatment you receive in New Zealand.

Q14. How do I pay my fees?

Once you receive your Letter of Offer and Invoice, you can pay your fees. If an education consultant is helping you with your application, they will help you with this process.

Q15. Can I arrive late for the start of my course?

No. It is very important that you arrive in time for the start of your course as there will not be much time to catch up. It is a good idea to make sure that you book your flights well in advance.

Q16. What if my flight details change?

If your flight changes, it is important that you tell us straight away either through your educational agent/consultant or directly on +64 93099558.

Q17. What will I learn in my first week?

The first week is orientation week. You will learn about your college, its rules and its staff as well as New Zealand culture. You will be given an information package to help you during your time with us – please read everything carefully.

Q18. Who can help me if I have a problem while I’m studying?

ICA has Student Services Officers who are there to help international students. You will meet them during your first week with us.

Q19. How are the fees that I have paid protected?

Fees paid by students are banked directly into a Public Trust Account.

Q20. What happens if ICA is unable to deliver my course?

Students can request a refund if ICA is unable to deliver their course.

Q21. Do I have to do anything if I change my address?

Yes. You must complete a “Change of details form” and hand it to the Receptionist/your Student Services Officer if you change your contact details, type of accommodation, or your residential address.

Q22. Is there any extra English help available during my course?

Yes. ICA will be able to assist you with your English needs. Please discuss your needs with your lecturer.

Q23. I am under 16 years old. Can I study at ICA?

No. If you are an international student, you must be at least 16 years old to study at International College of Auckland.

Q24. What if I have a complaint?

Firstly, you should see the Student Services Officer. They will discuss it with you. They will also be able to advise you on how the complaints procedure works. During your orientation, you will be given more information about this process.

Q25. Do I have to always speak English?

Yes. While you are at ICA, it is important that you speak English – even if it is sometimes easier to speak your own language. If your Student Services Officer speaks your language, then it is okay to speak to them in your language about personal matters.

Q26. Can you help me to find somewhere to live?

Yes. We work with an organization to provide homestay accommodation for our students. You can find an Application Form on the ICA website.

Q27. What is the Code of Practice?

The Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students is an important document from the New Zealand Ministry of Education. It sets standards for the pastoral care of all international students studying in New Zealand. ICA complies with and is a signatory to the Code. We have copies and summaries of the Code available for you to read in different languages.

Q28. Can I start my course and then organize my Visa afterwards?

No. It is very important that you have a valid Visa before you enroll in your course. If your Visa has expired, then we cannot legally enroll you.

Q29. What documents should I bring with me?

It will make your time in New Zealand much easier if you bring the following documents with you:
• Birth certificate
• Marriage certificate (if applicable)
• Academic qualifications
• References from previous employers
• Curriculum Vitae
• Credit references
• International driver license
• Important medical records and prescription information

Q30. What sort of clothing should I bring?

The weather in New Zealand can be changeable. You should bring a variety of clothing that can be used in warm and cold weather as well as in the wet. NZ weather.
