Overview

This programme targets EAL (English as an Additional Language) learners who intend to participate in further English language or subject-specific mainstream education in Aotearoa New Zealand on courses which require a high level of linguistic proficiency and communicative competence at CEFR high B2. It aims to provide the language and academic English skills and knowledge necessary to communicate independently and clearly in a range of academic situations, in order to succeed in further academic programmes from the National Qualifications Framework (Level 6 or above, depending on the requirements of the qualification).

The programme focuses on the development of academic reading, listening, speaking, and writing skills. Each of these skills is taught and developed in conjunction with each other, along with academic lexical items, complex grammatical structures, critical thinking and academic study skills.

Delivery is blended, including face-to-face, self-directed and teacher-directed learning hours, and incorporates individual, pair and group work, project-based learning, problem-solving, task-based learning, role-plays, educational outings, and media-based learning.

By the end of this programme, graduates will be able to:

  • Understand extended, complex oral academic texts on a wide range of topics.
  • Participate flexibly and effectively in extended spoken academic discourse on a wide range of topics.
  • Understand extended, complex written academic texts on a wide range of topics.
  • Write well-structured, sophisticated, extended academic texts on a wide range of topics.

Entry Requirements

Applicants may be admitted to this programme:

  • Providing they are 16 years of age or older;
  • Upon completing the entry test, demonstrating their suitability for this level; or
  • Upon completing the New Zealand Certificate in English Language Level 4 (General, Academic or Employment); or
  • Upon achieving an overall 6.0 in the IELTS test (with no lower than 5.5 in each section), or equivalent in other internationally recognised English language tests.
