Overview

Graduates of the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 1) will have the language skill and knowledge required to communicate in everyday situations of immediate personal relevance, in order to participate in daily life and/or further education. The course is equivalent to Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) A2.

The course is composed of four components — listening, reading, speaking, and writing — totalling 60 credits.

Most lessons are delivered in a classroom and incorporate a wide range of activities such as role plays, educational outings, individual, pair and group work, discussion, games, project-based learning, task-based learning, and media-based learning.

This programme leads on to the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 2).

Entry Requirements

Applicants may be admitted to this programme:

  • Provided that they are 14 years of age or older; and
  • Upon completing the English Internal Entry Test, demonstrating suitability for the programme level; or
  • Upon successful completion of the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 1) (Foundation) programme.
