Overview

Are you ready to power up your future in engineering? The New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (Electrical) offered at ICA is designed to equip students with the essential theoretical knowledge and hands-on practical skills required to excel in the dynamic field of electrical engineering, especially in power systems. This nationally developed and internationally recognised qualification focuses on real-world industry needs and is aligned with Engineering New Zealand standards.

Students will gain solid grounding in electrical principles, machinery, and sustainable energy, and will also complete an industry-focused capstone project. Real-world labs, small class sizes, and experienced tutors make this programme ideal for future electrical technicians and engineers.

Entry Requirements
Domestic Students

You must be at least 16 years of age when you start this programme and have at least one of the following:

  • Have NCEA Level 2 with:
    • A minimum total of 48 credits at Level 2 in four subjects, including at least 12 credits in mathematics (preferably achievement standards in algebra, calculus or trigonometry); and
    • 10 literacy credits at Level 1 or higher (for those who achieved NCEA Level 2 before 2013).
  • Equivalent qualifications (e.g. International Baccalaureate or Cambridge).
  • Equivalent credits from appropriate trades training and/or demonstrated skills and experience.
English Language Entry Requirements (Domestic)

In addition to meeting the minimum academic entry criteria, applicants must also satisfy one of the following English language requirements:

  • A minimum of 8 credits at NCEA Level 2 in English (4 in Reading and 4 in Writing); or
  • For applicants for whom English is a second language (including international students studying domestically), an overall band score of 6.0 in IELTS (Academic), with no individual component below 5.5, or an equivalent qualification.

Applicants must be physically capable of completing the practical aspects of the programme, by being able to work effectively, efficiently and safely.

Applicants who do not meet the entry requirements will be counselled to an appropriate foundation programme.

Special & Discretionary Admission (Domestic)

Domestic applicants aged under 20 years who have not met the general academic admission and entry criteria for the programme, but who can demonstrate a reasonable chance of success through other educational attainment and/or work or life experience, may be eligible for provisional entry at the discretion of the Academic Dean or designated nominee. Provisional entry places restrictions on re-enrolment, which may be lifted if the applicant’s performance is deemed satisfactory by the Academic Dean or designated nominee.

International Students

All applicants must be at least 16 years of age when they begin their studies, and they should meet the country-specific admission requirements. To be eligible for entry into this programme, you must hold a secondary school qualification that is equivalent to New Zealand’s National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) Levels.
