Before You Leave Home

Moving to New Zealand to study is an exciting step, and preparing well before you leave your home country will help make your arrival smoother and more enjoyable. The checklist below outlines the key things to organise before you travel.

1. Confirm Your Visa & Travel Documents

Make sure your student visa is approved before you travel. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your stay, and keep printed and digital copies of your visa, passport, Offer of Place, fee receipts, and insurance documents.

2. Arrange Accommodation in New Zealand

Secure your accommodation before you leave home so you know exactly where you will be staying upon arrival. Make sure you understand the terms of your accommodation or tenancy agreement.

Book your flights so you arrive before orientation or your first class. Share your travel itinerary with your family or support people and keep a copy with you when travelling.

All international students must have approved medical and travel insurance for the entire length of their study. Check that your policy meets the Code of Practice requirements.

9. Pack Smartly

New Zealand has strict biosecurity rules. You must declare any food, plant, or animal products, and some items are not allowed at all. Pack suitable clothing for New Zealand’s changeable weather and seasons.

New Zealand uses Type I power plugs and a 230/240V power supply, so bring an adapter if needed.
