New Zealand Certificate in English Language – Level 4 (Academic Qualifier)
The New Zealand Certificate in English Language (NZCEL) Level 4 covers a wide range of more advanced speaking, reading, writing and listening skills to enable students to communicate independently and effectively in familiar and some less familiar situations in everyday and academic English language contexts. This course is ideal for students who wish to pursue further education in an English language setting. The course is equivalent to CEFR B2 and graduates are expected to complete the course with an English level equivalent to IELTS 5.5 to 6.0.
The course is divided into four components: reading, writing, listening and speaking which are taught at the same time through a variety of topics.
The certificate has 60 credits and is delivered over 16 weeks with a one week break. Classes are schedule from Monday – Thursday (9am-2:30pm) and Friday (9am-12pm). The majority of lessons are be delivered in the classroom and include a variety of activities such as debates, presentations, writing workshops, assignments, and research. Students are also expected to complete 17 hours of independent study each week. The course has an academic focus and requires intensive study and research outside of the class.
Students may be admitted to this programme:
- providing they are 14 years of age or older
- upon completing the Entry Test or Internal Test, demonstrating their suitability for this level, or upon completing the New Zealand Certificate Level 3.
NZCEL Level 4 meets the required English language proficiency requirements to enter most New Zealand Level 5, 6, and 7 certificate or diploma programmes. It also leads to NZCEL Level 5.
