New Zealand Certificate in English Language – Level 4 (Academic Qualifier)
The New Zealand Certificate in English Language (NZCEL) Level 4 (Academic) covers a wide range of more advanced speaking, reading, writing and listening skills to enable students to communicate independently and effectively in a range of academic contexts. This course is ideal for students who wish to pursue further education in an English language setting. The qualification is equivalent to CEFR mid-B2 and graduates are expected to complete the course with an English proficiency equivalent to IELTS 6.0 (Academic)
The course is divided into four components: reading, writing, listening and speaking which are taught at the same time.
The certificate has 60 credits and is delivered over 18 weeks.. Classes are scheduled from Monday – Friday (9am-2:30pm). The programme will be delivered in the classroom and include a variety of activities such as pair work, group work, group discussions, debates, presentations, writing workshops, assignments, and research. Students are also expected to complete 15 hours of independent study each week. The course has an academic focus and requires intensive study and research outside of the class.
Students may be admitted to this programme:
- providing they are 16 years of age or older
- upon completing the Entry Test, demonstrating their suitability for this level OR upon completing the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Applied) (Level 3) OR achieving an overall Band 5.5 in an IELTS test with no less than 5 in each section
NZCEL Level 4 meets the required English language proficiency requirements to enter most New Zealand Level 5, 6, and 7 certificate or diploma programmes. It also leads to NZCEL Level 5 (Academic).
